Despite the device’s promise, complications associated with the Apex K2 hip implant soon arose. Though its patented Dual Press Hip Stem Technology strengthens the connection between the stem and neck and eliminates extra space at the junction of these two components, thus creating less friction and increasing the safety of the implant – it’s also a metal-on-metal device. As such, there’s always a chance that the two pieces rubbing together could release tiny metal particles into the bloodstream and surrounding tissues, causing a form of metal poisoning called metallosis.
In addition to causing pain and swelling, metallosis can also weaken the joint and bone. It eventually leads to the loosening of the implant and device failure, with the patient requiring a complex revision surgery which involves replacing the metal implant with one that uses ceramic or plastic surfaces. Though some patients will enjoy an improvement of their symptoms after their revision, others experience permanent pain and a loss of mobility for the rest of their lives.
